Baseball's Season Ends in First Round of Postseason
The Lakers took on the Kellogg Community College Bruins in a best of three game series in the first round of postseason play. The Lakers hit the road, and game one did not back down from the #7 nationally ranked Bruins.
After trailing 6-2 heading into the eighth inning, the Lakers put up a 5 spot thanks to a grand slam off the bat of Brendan Willadsen, giving the Lakers a 7-6 lead heading into the ninth. The Bruins pushed across a run in the ninth to force extra innings, where they eventually walked it off for a 8-7 game one loss for the Lakers.
The Lakers had 9 hits in the game, including multi-hit games from Avain Rivera, Brendan Willadsen, and Isiah Stoy. Brady Alverson and Rivera each doubled, while Willadsen homered. Donovan Borg and Rivera each drove in one run while Willadsen drove in four. Trevor Crawford pitched 5.2 innings allowing just 2 earned runs while striking out 6. Jarrett Inscho received the loss after throwing 3.1 innings of relief, allowing one earned run to cross the plate.
Game two was a seven inning game that was all Bruins. The Lakers were blanked 5-0, ending their season.
Dean Sommer started, allowing 4 earned runs over 3.1 innings, while Alex Duley came in to finish off the game, throwing 3.2 innings allowing just 1 unearned run to score. The lone hit for the Lakers was off the bat of Brady Alverson.
Losing in the first round should not diminish what this team accomplished. This marked the second consecutive postseason appearance for the Lakers which included a 27-win season, and a second place finish in the inaugural MCCAA Northern Conference.
