GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After taking three of four from Delta over the weekend, the Mid Michigan College baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Grand Rapids Community College on Monday to win the season series 3-2. The Lakers won game one 5-2, before rolling to an 11-5 victory in game two.
Game 1:
The Lakers led 2-0 after three innings of play, before extending their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth. In the sixth, Mid scored twice more to take a 5-0 lead. The host Raiders tried to respond in the bottom half of the sixth, scoring two runs to make it 5-2, but were unable to get any closer.
Eddie McDonald went 2-of-2 at the plate with two walks and an RBI, while also stealing three bases. Tyler Schultz and Jack Nilson each recorded an RBI, while Isiah Stoy was 1-of-4 with an RBI double.
On the mound, Luke Sherman went 5.0 innings with four strikeouts to earn the win. Jordan Nelson came in and pitched the final two innings for the Lakers, striking out two batters.
Game 2:
Mid scored first again in the second game of the day, as Caleb Thomas drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt to score Nilson. The Lakers made it 4-1 after a failed pickoff attempt by GRCC, however the Raiders fought back to make it 4-3. That was the closest they got however, as Mid was able to win going away.
Trey Boven drove in two runs, while Justin Esch also recorded an RBI. Brandon Williams earned the win on the mound for the Lakers, allowing just two hits in 3.0 innings of work. Donovan Heugh struck out a team high four batters in 2.0 innings.
The sweep moved Mid's record to 17-10 overall and 9-4 in MCCAA Northern Conference action.
UP NEXT:
The Lakers will begin a series with Muskegon on Thursday. Mid will travel to face the Jayhawks in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm Thursday, before returning home Friday to take on Muskegon at Mount Pleasant High School.
